Marubankojo 丸伴工場

Marubankojo, as a contemporary ceramic studio in the Shigaraki region, combines hand-painted decoration with overglaze enamel (aka-e). Its works align closely with current Japanese aesthetics and everyday use.

Their pieces are rooted in the distinctive clay of Shigaraki ware. Forms are created through slab-building and hand-shaping, often retaining visible hand-formed textures and irregular painted lines—intentional traces that preserve the natural undulations and tactile qualities of the making process.

Interestingly, the name “Marubankojo” originally belonged to a ceramic factory that has since closed. The artist, drawn to the name, chose to carry it forward—like gently continuing a painting that was once nearing its end. Along with the name, they also carry on and further develop traditional methods of craftsmanship.
